Hi, I am in my thirties and I am thinking of learning the cello. Have always love the deep mellow sound of the instrument. :) I am wondering if there are any other adults learning the cello out there, and how hard is it to pick it up? How long does it take to play proficiently (very subjective, I know)… does anyone have a good cello teacher to recommend?

Thank you!

I have a multi-talented friend who plays the Cello really well! She is studying in SIM and is the president of the String Ensemble. She doesn’t really teach Cello but she gives piano lessons to pre-school-primary school children! Let me know if you’d like me to link you up with her! Perhaps she might be able to teach cello too :)

Thank you Tomcat, Mommy 3 times over and Empty nest for your sharing! Sorry, have been so busy with work that I didn’t have time to check on this although I did receive notifications on your responses. Thank you, thank you! :)

Yes, I recently had a change of cello teacher who is from Ukraine and she is sooo good! I think finding a good teacher is really a matter of luck. Learning the instrument this late has its problems too, I am so stiff! Cello requires a relax body and especially relaxed right arm and hand so that the weight is put on the bow to produce the deep, mellow sound. Constantly learning… I will watch youtube videos to learn cello playing after my kids are in bed. :)

Empty Nest, I am into Bach now! I must master Bach Prelude in C major… the ever popular piece used in advertisements. :p Steve from the The Piano Guys played a different version of it very well, check it out! :)I will check out the link you shared. Thank you so much.

Hi! I was in my colleague’s car and she played cello music to help her learn playing the cello! How cool! Hope this will inspire and encourage your journey of learning the cello!

My sister learns the harp as an adult and it makes really pure, beautiful sound. I can really understand why the Giant can fall asleep listening to it. Many string instruments produce nice sound. Explore a few instruments before settling for one.
