This shouldn’t be happening in our schools!

I think its important for parents to identify symptoms in their child – most victims are often afraid to tell others.. Just read the new October issue of the catalyst library. I will be watching out for the 7 signs as mentioned – that’s a start for me! I’ve always wondered how best can parents know other than finding out from a third party… like the student from Shuqun Secondary. It is tough but I hope I can let my children know that I’m always there for them.

This repot is a bit old but worth reading.

As part of an anti-bullying initiative by the Singapore Children’s Society, a survey of secondary school students was conducted by the Society in 2006. The aim was to examine the prevalence of the various forms of bullying behaviours experienced by our secondary school students, the effects bullying had on them, the sources of support these victims turned to, and their perceived effectiveness. A profile of these victims and their bullies, and of self-admitted bullies, was also created. The findings were examined in relation to gender, ethnicity, and educational levels.

It sad to see such cases happening in Singapore. I think the family plays a very important role in teaching their children the right thing – they shouldn’t always resort to stepping over others’ heads to gain attention or power over another…. Parents need to spend more time with their child to find out what is going on at school!

Agree with you! I recall one of my friends telling his son to fight back when get bullied. Not sure if this is the way to bring up our kids!

Teenagers who got bullied in school will not share with their parents. It is pretty embarrassing for them to be mistreated and not retaliate with many pairs of eyes watching them (especially with girls around!). Poor guys! Perhaps schools could encourage whistle blowers!

My friend in his mid 30s said that he had worst bullies in his sec school days then (he won’t say whether he was the bully or the victim! haha!) I studied in a girls school and did not experience such physical abuse. I think boys being boys … just playful …. but judging from the video, it’s obviously not play-play … And no one stood up! Heard that the parents made police report. Shall wait and see how this gets resolved!

This is sooooo sad! T_T
i think the parents need counselling and training to help their kids who are bully!
The responsibilities also lie with the parents to bring up their kids properly.

Good opportunity to counsel both parties to help them grow into REAL men!  It’s a heart issue.  More than just a behavioural problem / outward “appearance”.  Need to go to the root of the problems!  Might be psychological,  physical, family background, cultural, personality disorder, peer influence, wrong moral values …..

It has been happening in our schools! In a way, glad that it gets exposed now so that educators can look into helping the victims. Besides physical abuse, i know of boys who got boycotted and isolated! Right here in Singapore schools!
