Hi Dr Tham, I have a son who is 7 years old. He learns very fast and when he wants to, he can whatever he is working on really well, be it in sports or school work. However, he has a tendency to take short cuts/ and find loopholes if he has to do something that he’s not 100% interested in. At his age, what can I do to motivate him to do his best? (Besides explaining the need to do his best?)

Hi Su Mei. It could be your son has been reinforced to do well almost everytime in many endeavours. Now, your emphasis ought to be (1) to reinforce his efforts each time you catch him putting in his best, (2) De-emphasise outcomes or results and (3) help your son find enjoyable things in the work or sports that he does.
